What is Voice Movement Therapy (VMT)?

Voice Movement Therapy is an exploration of the self through the use of the voice. The Voice Movement Therapy (VMT) system is used to explore and open up the vocal range, which in turn allows access to the many different aspects of the self. VMT combines psychotherapeutic principles with breath work, movement, imagery, song and improvisation. Through sound and movement VMT seeks to explore the relationship of mind, body and spirit, and give expression to the conditions which arise from being human.

The human voice reflects us in our entirety, it possesses the ability to convey our emotional state and our conscious thoughts by literally bridging the gap between the head and the belly, bringing out into the outside world what is inside. With our voice we communicate with others, and also, most importantly, with ourselves.

Who is VMT for?

Voice Movement Therapy is for those who would like to sing but may feel they cannot or that they dare not, for those who would like to recover their voices and for those who feel their ability to express themselves has been adversely affected, whether through emotional, physical or psychological difficulties.

VMT is useful for those seeking to build up confidence or self esteem, for those looking to reclaim their voices; whether it be the physical voice, the creative voice, the voice of reason or instinct, the many voices of the many selves. Voice Movement Therapy is for those people who yearn to sing or voice themselves, and feel and hear the echo of their soul.
